Ethiopian Airlines resumes flights to Mekelle

Ethiopian Airlines, the largest network operator in Africa, announces the resumption of its flights to Mekelle from Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, starting from today Wednesday December 28, 2022.

Regarding the flight resumption, Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mr. Mesfin Tasew said “We are truly pleased with the resumption of our flights to Mekelle. The resumption of these flights will enable families to reunite, facilitate the restoration of commercial activities, stimulate tourist flow and bring many more opportunities which will serve the society. We are ready to serve our passengers who are traveling on the route between Addis Ababa and Mekelle and play our part in the socio-economic development of our country.”



With planned daily flights to Mekelle, Ethiopian will increase the daily frequency depending on the demand on the route. Ethiopian currently operates to a total of 20 domestic destinations currently and plans to increase this number in the coming years. In a related development, Following the signing of the peace agreement in Pretoria, both sides have further met twice in Nairobi, Kenya to iron out implementation plans. “Relatedly, a Federal Government high-level delegation led by Speaker of the House of People’s Representatives, Tagesse Chafo traveled to Mekele city on Monday December 26, 2022 in a joint review exercise of the implementation process with members of the TPLF,” the Office of the Prime Minister of Ethiopia said in a statement.

While Federal Government service providers have been undertaking repair works in areas under government control, key milestones on basic service restoration work includes:



– restoration of telecom services in 27 towns plus Mekele city as of today (maintenance of some 1,800 kms fiber optics line is underway, with around 981 km of the line so far completed)
– initiation of preliminary banking services (the bank was able to get access to 42 branches and has resumed banking services in 17 branches)
– resumption of flight by Ethiopian Airlines, preliminarily to Mekele as of today December 28, 2022
– restoration of electricity in various cities, including Mekele (almost the entire Tigray region has been connected to national power grid)

Per data as at December 22, humanitarians assistance that includes 110,509 metric tons of food items; 879,980 litres of fuel; and 1431 metric tons of medical supplies have reached Mekele. Considering daily movement of supplies, these figures are bound to be higher over the past week,” the PM Office said.
